For an in depth look at this topic, see Using Oils with Acrylics. Keep in mind, that oils can be used over acrylics, but acrylics are not compatible over oil paints. Oil. Another easy-to-apply product are the various types of oils. These products polymerize due to contact with air and leave a sturdy film on the wood. This can be a relative hard layer, hard enough to accept a high gloss. Other types of oil need to be reapplied annually. Yellowing of the oil or the wood is also a factor. If you have a blue stain and paint a thin layer of pale, transparent yellow over it, you get a green. Clear oil that yellows will cause the blue to shift towards green over time. Same idea with a yellow base and transparent blue - it leans towards green. This is a much slower process, but the Tru-Oil will impart more chatoyance to the wood grain than spray lacquer or poly. And by the way, Warmoth does accept Tru Oil as a hard finish on their necks. So I don't know how Fender could possibly finish up guitars and ship them to stores while the lacquer is still soft. I then went to RC car paints, about half the cost. Lately I have been using Testors Acrylic paints. I bought a whole bunch in a kit for $12 at the Kraft store.
